> Abstract
The valuation of intellectual property rights, particularly patents, is a notoriously difficult yet increasingly relevant task for strategists and technology managers. This 90 minute lecture is an introduction to the fundamental theoretical aspects and empirical challenges of the valuation of both individual patents and portfolios thereof. After defining the concept patent value for strategic managerial purposes, the lecture describes established valuation methods for individual property rights (cost-based and income-based approaches, including DCF, DTA/DCF and RO approaches) and discusses their pros and cons. Finally, the particular theoretical challenges of valuing patent portfolios are elucidated, and an overview and a practical example of a state-of-the art valuation used in academic research are presented.
